Mario Kart Tournament

by Cole Rispin

One of my favourite pastimes is smoking some good bud and playing video games with my good buds. Whether slapping each other silly on “Goldeneye 64”, forming a posse in “Red Dead Redemption” or finding out which friend is the best liar with “Among Us'', fusing gaming and cannabis is a timeless staple.

One game has particularly stood the test of time across the world. It’s bright colours, fast paced action, fun characters, tight and flawless gameplay - not to mention the underlying innuendos - Mario Kart has reigned supreme.

Mario Kart is one of those few games where you can become someone’s best friend while simultaneously destroying another lifelong friendship with the simple firing of a blue turtle shell. It spawns generations of people to stay up late with their friends cursing Wario till the sun comes up.  It’s no wonder that the latest entry in the Mario Kart series continues to remain in Nintendo’s top selling games despite it being an 8 year old game.

It reminds many of us of our carefree days discovering cannabis. One of my favourite memories with Mario Kart was the time my very competitive best friend was mad at me for a week after I shell knocked him out of first place last place as we all passed him in almost every race. Boy oh boy was he angry with me. I wish I could say, “we were kids and kids are crazy like that,” but this was last year. I still laugh about it even now as I write this and can not wait to do it to him again. And yes, I just let out an evil chuckle as I wrote that.

The franchise itself has worked its way into the cannabis subculture. Infused art, black market products, and its ability to keep its audience engaged are all reasons Mario, Luigi, and company are, in my opinion, the crowned champion game of infused gaming.

Mario and Co. have become such a staple in the mainstream that March 10th or “MAR10” has been designated “Mario Day”. A day for all us nerds to celebrate that short mustachioed plumber we all love so dearly.

This year for Mario Day, Welcome Cannabis Burlington, wanted to celebrate our fondness for Mario - and video games paired with cannabis as a match made in heaven - and hold our inaugural Mario Kart tournament for charity. The event will take place at the Welcome Cannabis Burlington store on March 10, 2022.

The charity we will be playing for is called “Get Well Gamers Canada,” a new organization located in Toronto Ontario, that is giving donated Video Games and Consoles to hospitals across Canada. Please check this incredible charity out when you get the chance and give them your support.

To sign up for the tournament, just come into our Burlington location and for a 5 dollar donation you are entered into the tournament. The Tournament will be held from 7pm - 9pm. Prizes and a trophy to be won for the top 3 players. A raffle will also be held for your very own Nintendo Switch Lite!  Come into the Burlington location for more details on both the tournament and the raffle.

Welcome Cannabis looks forward to seeing you for our inaugural Mario Kart tournament. If you think you have what it takes to win against your fellow cannabis purchasing pals then we challenge you to show us your Mario Kart skills!
